Arbors

« Previous -- Next »
This freestanding arbor is made from western red cedar and measures 16x24 at its widest and longest sides. It is supported by four 6x6 columns and two 6x6 beams spanning 15' maximum.
The longest of the 24" on center 2x12 joist at the front of the arbor cantilever (extends beyond without support) the center 6x6 beam by 12'. An additional 4x12 beam was added under the center beam for extra support because of the weight displaced by the cantilever.
The top surface of the joists was covered with 1x2 strips spaced 1-1/2" apart. The front end of the joist were cut to an iregular lengths to produce the shape you see here. Than the ends were trimmed with a double band of 1x4 at the top and bottom.
Not shown in detail, each 2x12 joist has a 2" deep notch where a joist rests on a beam.
This notch helps to prevent the joist from rolling in one direction or the other when properly fastened.
